Laura’s Story

“Our only hope and Sean’s future were in the hands of the health care team. We depended on them to guide us through the fear and uncertainty."

My name is Laura Grant. Recently, my husband — Sean — wrote to you to share how the team at Richmond Hospital turned his life around.

I am so grateful for how the doctors and staff at Richmond Hospital took care of Sean — of us. That’s why we hope that you will support the critical work that they do for our community and make as generous a donation as you can today.

One morning several months ago, Sean found a lot of blood in his urine — a frightening sight. Sean was seemingly in good health. There had been no prior indications of any kind of trouble.

He immediately sought medical attention and underwent lab tests, an ultrasound, and a CT scan. Before long, everyone was calling — the hospital, our family doctor, and the urologist’s office. The tests indicated that there was an 8 cm tumour on Sean’s right kidney and they couldn’t rule out that the cancer had not spread outside the kidney.

We were devastated. What was going to happen to Sean? What did the future hold for our family? What if the unthinkable became reality? This was when it became clear to me that our only hope and Sean’s future were now in the hands of the health care team. We depended on them to guide us through this uncertain journey.

The team at Richmond Hospital moved quickly and Sean was scheduled for surgery. Even with the quick pace, they truly made an effort to help us process the news and put us at ease.

Surgeons at Richmond Hospital completed a laparoscopic nephrectomy, a minimally invasive procedure to remove the kidney. It was quick and successful. And we learned that the cancer had not, in fact, spread outside the kidney. It had been caught in time. We were so relieved.

I can’t really thank the team at Richmond Hospital enough for turning my husband’s life around. We have since celebrated our son’s 19th birthday. For Sean and me, our gratitude extends beyond the professionalism and skill of the doctors, surgeons, nurses and sta. Throughout the process, the uncertainty and fear were extremely difficult to manage, and it was the compassion and kindness we received from everyone we encountered at Richmond Hospital that helped us get through it all.

Imagine facing an uncertain future as we did, relying on the expertise and compassion of a dedicated team. I hope you will support Richmond Hospital Foundation and make as generous a gift as you are able. Your generosity will help ensure everyone receives the prompt and compassionate care my husband did, so they can look forward to a healthier future.

Your support means someone like Sean can have a hopeful future. It means more families can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that their loved ones are in good hands.

Thank you for considering a donation to Richmond Hospital Foundation. Your donation can make a real, tangible difference in people’s lives.

With gratitude,

Laura Grant
